Every time I read one of Wendy's books I marvel at how quickly I dive in and how quickly I finished it. I read this book in a span of 24 hours. And let me tell you the lives of Mummo and Annie, Theo and Arden. Even Gloria will fill you with joy and wonder and quite a few tears. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Himalayan Consulting -- Another substantial page-turner from Wendy Webb : Wendy Webb has indicated that The Keepers of Metsan Valo was inspired by her Finnish ancestry, and her love for her family's history clearly shows in this wonderful book. Some of her books are chock-full of juicy horror. Not so much in this one. Suspense? Mysterious house on Lake Superior? Sketchy characters? Spirits? Yes, thankfully, to all of the above. But this is more of a story of devotion and connection to one's ancestors. Anni Halla, an American expat living in Paris for ten years, is devastated to learn of the death of her beloved grandmother. Anni spent many summers living at Metsan Valo, her "Mummo's" estate that was built by her great-grandparents. She and her twin brother arrive at the lakefront property to host the arrival of family members. With a number of unexplainable incidents, they are left with questions that cannot rationally be answered. And, after the reading of a video will, is the family quite so cohesive? And the reference in the will to Finnish legends and spirits? Intriguing and a soon-to-be essential component of the novel. I loved that this story was set in familiar grounds, with characters and settings from previous novels taking part in the story. My favorite person from Ms. Webb's magnificent Daughters of the Lake, and not one from the 21st century, even has a cameo here. A happy family gathered together in an ancestral lakefront summer home: Illusory and ironic for me, but that's my own story. But it certainly is lovely to read about one in Keepers, a compelling, beautiful book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )

The most charming characters? No on all counts. I simply enjoy her books and the world she creates. It's like sinking into a warm bath after a stressful day. I remember how the starry night sky and Northern lights filled me with awe and reverence. I remember playing with my cousins in woodlands. I swarm in those impossibly deep cold lakes.
